MY TIPS FOR MIXING PRINTS

I’m not sure when I began a love affair with mixing prints. I think I can trace it back to when I worked for an interior decor company and studied how talented interior designers did it well. It creates a really cool look that is unique, and, for me, it became a fun way to me to express myself further through my style. The truth of the matter is, as far as I see it, the key to mixing prints in fashion is quite the same as mixing prints in a room. If you’re looking to dip your toes (or dive full-on) into mixing prints, here are my tips.

MY TIPS FOR MIXING PRINTS

Stick with neutrals at first. All neutrals go together in terms of color scheme, so you don’t have to worry about whether a color will go with another print you’re mixing.

Pull color from your main print. If you’ve graduated to mixing colorful prints, choose a main statement print, and make all the other prints you mix with it have similar colors or/tones that are in that main print.

Tie it together with accessories. This especially applies when you are mixing prints of all different colors. They’re like a bridge between them. You can see below in the photos from the shoot I did for fashion editorials in my digital magazine that using accessories that utilize different colors in the prints pulls the look together. Whether it’s hair clips, a belt, shoes, a bracelet–this completes the outfit.

Choose prints in different scales. When prints are of the same scale, the eye doesn’t know where to go first, and that can be dizzying. Play with prints of different sizes to make the look more balanced.

Anchor the look with a solid. Working in one solid piece helps to ground everything, especially if you’re using lots of color.

Above all else… F*ck it! There are no “rules.” Express yourself in whatever way you feel!
