YOUR FOOL-PROOF LAYERING FORMULA FOR FALL & WINTER

When temperatures dip, one of the most fun aspects of fashion is getting to layer. It makes for endless outfit opportunities with just a few pieces. But unless you do it right, you end up looking more like Ralphie’s little brother in A Christmas Story⎯an immobile blob of sweaters and coats. My fool-proof formula for fall and winter layering keeps you feeling warm and effortlessly stylish all season long, without the bulk. Check it out:

STEP 1: KEEP IT NEUTRAL & TEXTURED

Before you start building your layered outfit, scan your closet for neutral pieces that have different textures. That way you can be sure the look will coordinate and have dimension.

STEP 2: START WITH SOMETHING THIN

The layer that’s closest to your skin should be lightweight . I usually go for a sheer oversized long sleeve button down shirt that’s made with synthetic material, which holds in heat.

STEP 3: ADD A FLOWY TANK

The next layer to add is a flowy tank top that’s long enough to dip below your top layer (because you want people to see your fabulous layering skills!). Opting for a tank gives you another layer of warmth without making the outfit bulky in the arms.

STEP 4: TOP WITH A CHUNKY KNIT

Now it’s time to add your thickest layer. Go for a loose fitting, chunky knit sweater. I like a cropped length, especially because I’m petite, and want the other layers to show underneath it.

STEP 5: ANCHOR WITH LEGGINGS

The key to layering without looking like a marshmallow is to balance out bulkier pieces with something sleek. Shoot for leg-skimming thermal leggings or a pair of skinny jeans that will anchor the outfit and show your shape.

STEP 6: FINISH WITH A HAT & SCARF

Even if you’re not a hat person, fall & winter are times when it’s totally acceptable to don something on your head. Wrap a wide, soft scarf around your neck to keep out any icy winds. This is where I do add in a little color, like this faded pink scarf.

STEP 7: ACCESSORIZE SMARTLY

While a boot would totally work in this situation, I like to flash a little ankle by wearing a low-heeled oxford shoe or sleek flat. Again, this streamlines the look rather than adding more bulk. And since most of your body is too covered up for a necklace, shoot for a fun bracelet or statement watch.
